JOHN RYS RECOGNITION

John Rys will be attending the ball this year and I am featuring him as he has been a previous ORMB Presenter. He responded to a question as to why a person would love to do living history. His response:

I have been lucky to portray many interesting persons, most of them fairly unknown. I always enjoyed researching an individual and trying to bring them to life (hence, the term “living history”).

Recently I was persuaded by a friend in the hobby who portrays Jefferson Davis to portray Alexander Stephens, the Confederate Vice President. At first I was hesitant because most of what I had heard about him was negative. But on researching him I found him to be intelligent and dedicated to doing what he felt was in the best interest of the people of his State of Georgia, and not unlike my younger self in many ways. I even shaved off a moustache of 20 ears to this impression. I am glad that I gave it a try.

CHRIS RALLS, PHOTOGRAPHER

Chris Ralls, Photographer

Christopher Ralls is a life-long resident of NE Ohio who has been engaged in photography since he was in Jr. High School.  After military service in the US Air Force and completing several University degrees, he pursued a professional career in Organizational Development that included production of his own photographic images in support of instructional design, training programs and safety systems for corporate clients.  In retirement he serves as the resident photographer for several area dance studios and produces fine art images from extensive international travel.  His studio signature: ‘Photographique Sherdian’, reflects his heritage with his distant uncle Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, one of Ohio’s most famous Civil War participants.  Information about obtaining copies of the event’s photographs will be available during the event.

I’m looking forward to attending this year’s Military Ball on Feb. 17.  As a long time NE Ohio dance and Historical photographer with a significant Civil War family history, I find this event to be a wonderful and warming event during our cold February days.  I’m happy to offer my services as an image documentarian (gratis) while attending.  I’ll be taking some photos for my personal album and am happy to offer them to you and the organization as appropriate.  So, if you need or want some additional imagery of the day’s events or wish to request some specific views, please let me know.  Thank you for your consideration.

SUTLER HISTORY

Sara Gonzales, Ensembles of the Past Reproductions, Bespoke Garments, Materials, & Timeless Heirlooms for Generations to Come

Ensembles of the Past garments are not merely pieces of cloth cut and arranged in a certain way…They are individual stories:

Masterpieces of thought, energy, and emotion, and are individually designed to reflect and flatter who you truly are, both inside and out.

My sewing career unexpectedly began at the age of 12, when I rather ambitiously my attempted and completed a 1770s colonial dress on my own. At that time, I never dreamed I’d one day be making garments of my own design, drawing, drafting, and draping patterns,  and creating unique creations inspired by extant garments for clients around the world. I’ve come a long way since bashfully wearing my first historical piece around Colonial Williamsburg that summer. With every spare moment since, I’ve enjoyed studying period fashion plates to fragile museum pieces, and taking time to recreate facsimiles for use in our modern day!    It’s my absolute joy to serve each and every one of the customers and clients the Lord has graciously brought my way through the years. By His grace, I am able to live my passion, and I can honestly say that I have found my calling. From a spiritual standpoint, the Lord has helped me in outstanding and humbling ways from my very first gown until now, and it is because of His guidance and never-ending mercy that my original fragile ambition and silly hope has turned into something much greater… How utterly amazing it’s been to watch and learn!

Dan Masters, Civil War Author

The descendant of four Union veterans of the Civil War, Dan Masters has been deeply involved in the study of that conflict since the late 1990s.   He has written ten books, numerous articles, and 800 blog posts about the Civil War, much of his work focusing on the western theater.  His third book, Sherman’s Praetorian Guard, won a local history publication award in 2018. In 2022 recently released the first in a three-volume trilogy entitled Echoes of Battle: Annals of Ohio’s Soldiers in the Civil War, the second volume of which will debut in spring 2024.  In addition to regularly writing on his blog Dan Masters’ Civil War Chronicles, he also recently finished work on Hell by the Acre: A Narrative History of the Stones River Campaign to be published by Savas Beatie in the summer of 2024. Dan currently lives in Perrysburg, Ohio with his wife Amy and five of their six children while his oldest son is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Author Jeri Klobutcher

Jeri started to write in 2013 and self-published my first book that same year under my writing name, JAKe (pronounced like Jackie) Hatmacher.  I have also written other pieces.  One was a short story which was published in an anthology with several other writers.  I  have also written a number of poems, a couple of which I was able to read to a group of other poets from the northern Ohio area. My interest in Civil War Era reenacting came from writing a two-book series, and if it had not been for my choosing to incorporate that period in history into my novels, I most likely never would have sought out to partake in Civil War Era dancing!
