"Dr. Walker is the first and only woman awarded the medal of honor. She served as a doctor during the civil war for the Union, including a posting as the assistant surgeon for the 52nd Ohio Infantry, under Gen. Dan McCook.

The National First Ladies Library is open Tues. through Sat. with tours starting at 9:30 A.M., 10:30 A.M., 12:30 P.M.. 1:30 P.M. and 2:30 P.M. Reservations are recommended but not always necessary. (The problem is it includes the Saxton/Mckinley house and it is difficult to give tours to any group of visitors that number more than 15.) The tour includes the Research Center and the Ida Saxton/William McKinley house which, as your members may know, is closely connected to Major McKinley, later to be President McKinley. The price for a tour is $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors, and $5.00 for kids. Dr. Walker ( aka Melinda Cooper) will be giving tours all day."
